  Elder Overstays Welcome With My Mom

  the other day i visited my mother and as i was leaving, an elder and 2 young publishers came to see how my mother was doing.

  after exchanging brief pleasantries, i left.

  the elder stayed over an hour and my mother, growing more exhausted, asked if the elder could say a prayer before he left.

  The cong do something similar with my MIL but usually try and stick around. I can tune out the love bombing and it tends to make cleaning up the aftermath easier.

  A bottle of over the counter blood thining pills appeared recently and my wife and her mum were taking them.

  why?

  Apparently someone in the cong had a stroke and if she had been taking these they might have saved her.

  yeah....okay...right.........

  Between that and don't get the H1N1 vaccine as it has blood products in it line one of them pulled a few months ago, i didn't realise the elders and co were SO knowlegable on medical issues!

  On multiple pages it quotes the World Health Organisation data for smoking habits. Last time I checked, and still fairly certain they still are, the WHO were the health agency of the UN.

  As for the rest of the article watchtower are promoting the will power and bible study to quit!

  On that note I am going to light up this monte cristo, grab a bottle of my friend Mr Walker and play online poker!

  What happened to your marriage after you stopped believing?

  i know some posters here went through or are going through some painful things right now because of no longer believing when they have a husband / wife that still does.

  others were able to free the minds of their spouse.

  i'm assuming the latter is a lot more rare.. anyone that wishes to share their story, please do.. i'm looking to pass the info on to someone who doesn't totally believe, but may marry a jw.

  Tell them to go into it with their eyes open! IF they are a religious person in anyway shape or form this is not an easy path......

  My wife was born in to the "truth" and whilst she is definitely not a hard core dub as she drinks, gambles, has tattoos, sex before marriage, celebrates birthdays, christmas gives to non dub charities.....she is still a dub

  Firstly I love her to bits, she is my best friend

  However, the dub thinking can drive you nuts at times, dealing with other dubs (or in our case total avoidance) can be entertaining, the die hard dub relatives (mother in law in my case) biblical preaching that she want me to be saved as well!

  An then of course you will have to go to memorial to waste 45 minutes listening to the used car salesman routine slam every other religion, promise the end is comming soon and watch 150 people pass a glass of wine and crackers around!

  All these bits will put you to the point where you will snap eventually and blast someone (most likely your wife) with your thoughts over the WBTS!

  A then the serious dub mentality kicks in! As many here will tell you, and from personal experience, any open attack on the organisation to them is like persecution, in addition you have hit at what they see as a core attribute of what them and you might have well said you hate them! You don't but thats what it feels like to them as they have been "brainwashed" to think that way and then if you are lucky you might be allowed to sleep on the couch!

  Only your friend can make the choice but make sure he is aware of what lies in wait for him if he makes the leap!

  Are JWs discouraged from seeking mental help?

  my husband was raised in this religion, but was never baptized and does not go to meetings, although my mil is heavily involved.

  although my husband doesn't practice his religion, he believes it is the truth and i hate asking him questions, because he is very defensive of the religion.

  he and his mother, many years ago before i knew either of them, were treated for severe depression and hospitalized (at different times as a result of them going through divorces.

  Marriage councilling and therapy always make for some fun conversations with the MIL. Nothing that a talk with an elder can solve!

  The biggest fear for the elders is that the person in therapy will eventually question the truth! Remember therapy does tell you what to think but opens doors to help make you think and only if the person is open to the suggestion.

  One of the things my wife and I worked on in MC was empathy. How the other person feels, its not a strong point of mine but I found my Wife struggled with it even more. Therapy promotes free thinking the polar opposite of what the GB promotes.

  The other thing is that our therapist will not promote cutting people off unless it is totally toxic and even then it is a last resort as the mess to sort out afterwards is even worse. Again a polar opposite of what the GB promotes and again something my wife struggles with because she is ingrained with disassociation being a norm.

  Even in the real world ther is a stigma attached to going to see a therapist, but in faiths where it is not even encouraged, how many lives could be saved if they were more supportive of it.

  Would it have saved those 8 people in Virgina?

  as children, we were always taught not to accept candy from strangers and not to ride with strangers.

  however, it seems that the danger most always comes, not from a stranger, but from someone the child knows.. one day we headed to the school bus stop knowing we were 'almost' late.

  There are normally 4 ways that an abuser will justify their actions:

  Minimization - This is the "it was nothing" or "no one was hurt" or "they were willing" routine.

  Compartmentalization - They have the ability to section it off from everything else. They know it is wrong but its not part of them.

  Denial - It never happenened

  Religious - Justification by religion

  Be it any form of abuse these are the most common ways an abuser will justify their actions and usually they push this view on to their victim.

  Religion is bad due to the the fear of god or an all mighty being who you are taught to be subservient to and then also those in a position of power such as clergy or elders should also be given the same respect. As a child, vunerable or a god fearing person, the last thing you want to do is make him mad.

  Add into this that abusers (mental, physical,, sexual alike) tend to pick on impressionable or in someway vunerable people, it may not be obvious to the average person but to the abuser it is like a giant sign.

  Be aware that this type of behaviour isn't just used against kids, but all ages and sexes.

  my mum taught us very valuable lessons about Jehovah in her special way. Any other parents out there as psycho?

  ok before i start i know my mum was um "special" and had some, well...... bizzare training ideas.. .

  i was one of 7 kids, dad didnt help much coz he was sick, so my mum was left to run the 'ship' and she did it with an iron fist.. .

  we were never late for a meeting we sat, parents and 2 kids in one row the other 5 in row in front.

  i was browsing the wt web sight and i came across this article about a nuclear physicist who became a jw and got baptised the same year he graduated i can't believe it.. he was won over by the logic in the evolution book:.

  she gave me a book entitled did man get here by evolution or by creation?

  * also, she told my wife that during the bible study scheduled for the following week, they would consider a bible prophecy showing that 1914 was a significant year.

  Do you think the WT might have used a bit of creative licese with this?

  You would be amazed at how many engineers and scientists believe in religion! Its like they partition their lives between what they are doing (splitting atoms etc etc) and the religion

  I had a friend at university called Dave who did engineering with me and he was the son of some pastor in a baptist church, you know the sort where all of a sudden some one stands up and starts praising the lord! Anyway the guy builds weapons for the Army!

  it's sad to see that some things just don't change in the area of protecting priests involved with sexual abuse, even if it happened decades ago!

  the church should be ashamed of their knowing that certain priests are pedophiles and they are still priests, acting as a mediator between christ and people..

  I think if you look in the right places, you will find that no church or religion is any better than another.

  In the uk newpapers can be openly critical of politicians, religion, stars you name it provided it is legal. And it is open season on everyone. For every critical JW article there will be another on the Church of England or the roman catholics, jews etc.

  My wife was surprised at how critical the journalism was on everything and thought that the uk was badly run because of all the stories.

  When we came over to north america I have run a similar exercise to see how journalism over here is and the truth of the matter is that here the truth is very much more controlled, doesn't mean the problems aren't the same or not there, just the information is less accessable. However this is changing with freedom of information acts etc etc.

  Religion needs to divide people (us and them) for all sorts of reasons but mainly to keep control. I wouldn't be far off in guessing that JWs lap up all the bad articles written in the papers over other faiths! But then dismiss articles written by the same author on JWs as being aposolate rubbish!
